Living in Minnesota we experience cold, snowy winters….that go on and on and on. Sometimes the cold months can get long for me, however for my husband and son they are not long enough! My husband enjoys skating, playing hockey, snowmobiling, and playing out in the snow with the kids. My son could be outside for HOURS if we let him.
My middle daughter however lasts about 20 minutes and she is ready to be done. This is fine by me except it takes almost that long just to get her bundled up to go outside!
Recently I bought some squeeze bottles for decorating cookies and realized they would be perfect for snow painting. Unfortunately I did not have any powdered paint on hand and didn’t want to use food coloring since it would stain their snow gear.
I decided to pull out our washable paint, mix roughly a tablespoon of paint with the about 2 cups of water, and shake, shake, shake! At first I thought it was a fail because large chunks of paint remained at the bottom of the bottle. But I kept shaking and by the time the kids went outside it was completely dissolved! It felt like a win for only using things we have on hand!
I sent my older two children outside with 2 bottles each of different snow paints. And my daughter lasted more than an HOUR! They only came in because it was getting dark and cold. My dad even came over and joined in the fun by making the most colorful snowman I’ve ever seen!
When I noticed the bottles starting to get lower I just refilled with water and back outside they went.
As mentioned above you can also use powdered paint that you mix with water OR food coloring (NOT WASHABLE).
I would definitely recommend this activity to any mom trying to survive the cold months.
