Felt Bows Tutorial

Felt bows are a trendy, adorable, and affordable. They can be created in many styles and on varying clips or headbands. Today I will be showing you one style and hope to share others in the future.

When you purchase supplies you will have enough fabric for many bows of the same color. I would suggest keeping two for pigtail bows (or a couple extras in case you lose one) and then making some to give away. It’s a great, affordable gift option!

At the bottom of this post you will find a printable version of the tutorial. Hope that is helpful for you!

For this project you will need:

  • 9×12” felt
    • LINKED HERE
  • Nylon headbands or alligator clips
    • HEADBANDS LINKED HERE
    • ALLIGATOR CLIPS LINKED HERE
  • Hot glue gun

That’s all!

*Please note that the felt above is lower quality felt but also the cheapest price. You can also purchase premium felt for about double the price (still a steal!) to make higher quality bows.

Nylon Headband Tutorial (For alligator clip directions keep scrolling):

  1. Cut bow about 1” in width across the shortest direction of the felt.
  2. Follow the pictures provided below to tie your bow directly onto the band.
    1. Pull fairly tightly and move the felt around until you reach a look you are happy with.
    1. Cut the ends of the fabric to the length/style you prefer. Below you will find how I cut mine.
    1. Turn your bow to the back side and place small dots of hot glue hidden in the bow to keep it tied how you like it. Optional: place a small dot of glue between bow and nylon headband.
    2. Let glue dry and then…you’re done!

      • As you make these bows feel free to change it up to the look you prefer! For example, instead of cutting 1” strips feel free to try thinner and thicker. You’d be surprised how different this makes your bows look! See some of my pictures below to see what I’m talking about.

      • Something to note: there are different width of alligator clips you can purchase. Make sure to think through your preference before purchasing.
      • If the child you are making these for has fine hair another thing to consider is to add a silicone patch to the alligator clip to help it stay in place. Here is a link to the Etsy site that I use to purchase these.

To maximize the amount of clips & material here’s an option:

      • Purchase 15 different colors of felt.
      • Create 10 bows of each color. (This is assuming a couple of your bows are thicker than the 1” in my tutorial.)
        • *LINKED HERE
        • *LINKED HERE
      • Use all of the alligator clips (if you purchased the 150 pack)
        • *LINKED HERE

You will have made 150 bows for only $0.13/each! (Or $0.25/each for the higher quality felt that I linked) Keep some for the little ones in your life and give the others as inexpensive gifts!

If you make these I would love to know! Feel free to leave me a comment below and tell me your thoughts!
